Low Moods, High Moods – What is their effect on our daily lives? Part 2

High moods – the invisible traps

Do you remember the last time you have experienced a really high mood?

I bet you felt energised, inspired, a ball of light, believing everything is possible in this world.

A beautiful feeling isn’t it?

Many of us live for these moments of pure happiness and satisfaction. Numerous use different substances or search for dangerous activities to experience them if only for a limited time.

I believe it is fair to say we love high moods. We constantly search for them …

Often there is a connection in our head between high moods and happiness.

Is there anything better than feeling on the top of the mountain like “the king of the world”?

Maybe now you started wondering, ok, Dimmi, where you going with this…?

The High Mood, Low Mood scenario

Yes, dear friends, I’m very sorry but here come the pitfalls. Normally after the powerful beautiful feeling, there comes a very very low mood.

Imagine you are skiing and you’ve reached the top of the mountain. Astonishing beauty yet minutes later the only option for you is to start going down.

Often people and many of my clients shared with me the Low Mood, High Mood, Low Mood scenario. All of this happening more or less on autopilot. Like they have absolutely no control over this process. Most of the time no idea why it’s happening.

It can happen just after your wedding, or giving birth or getting a promotion you fought so much for…

It shouldn’t be that way … why it can’t last longer?

Ok, fellows, it is a long discussion, but I will try to give you a couple of directions that are worth thinking about.

The High Moods Traps

  1. Ego

Here is the moment to ask yourself, how much do I know about EGO? What is Ego?

And if you feel a bit confused, you are not alone, that’s more common than you believe…

All you need to know at this very moment is that the Ego is one of the reasons you experience almost immediate dissatisfaction after an episode of high mood. Especially if it is connected to some achievement.

The reason is, the Ego can’t ever be satisfied. It immediately starts searching for the next thing. For a faster, bigger obstacle to overcome. Ultimately to become the best, the first, the most powerful and accumulate the most possessions.

Pretending that it’s you,

the Ego tricks you to believe all of these let’s call them “pleasures of the physical world” can make you happy. And when in a moment of clarity you are seeing a glimpse of the truth – that this is impossible, Ego comes back with the next big project. Therefore we go back into our delusional state of mind wanting, needing, rushing, achieving…

There’re a lot more things to be said about Ego and desires but I would rather explain that step by step and when the time is right…

So let’s continue with the second invisible trap …

  1. Lack of patience

Lack of patience is firmly connected with wanting whatever it is to happen now.

Let us explore this situation…

Imagine the following …

Sunny weekend day. You are fresh, had a nice sleep, you feel high, grateful, loving and loved.

You talk with your loved one, friends or family about your amazing plans. How you want to travel the world one day, how you will have the dreamed house with a big garden. How you will do this and that …and the more you talk, you start seeing images in your head. Colourful images and you feel better and better imagining what would’ve been living in this future state of life.

And it is a marvellous feeling.

However…. couple of hours pass or maybe days and your life haven’t changed. It is the same, same house, same job, same challenges….and you wonder – what happened to the beautiful pictures in my head?

Where are they? Why I’m stuck in this boring life, with this boring job and most of all boring wife (just joking ladies) ….? (or something like this…)

What creeps in now is the dissatisfaction of your current situation. Of course, all I’m describing is happening on a completely subconscious level. It happens almost automatically and innocently. And we have no idea why we feel the way we feel…

All it is – We want to be there, instead of here and now. We stopped being grateful for what we have now, rather we focus on things we want in the future.

Yes, that’s it, and it is so simple, yet so powerful.

The escape

Ok, I’m sure you started to have a deep sense of what I’m talking about, especially if you have read some of my other articles.

And you might be thinking at the moment, and now what ..?

What is the benefit for me to know where my low moods are coming from and what are the invisible traps of high moods?

Just consider this…

The simple direction I can give you at this moment is – Acceptance.

Yes, that’s right. Don’t try to analyse it, even more, don’t try to understand it.

Let it be.

When you experience a low mood, connected with a previous high mood or not.

Just let it be.

Surrender.

Let it go through your body, inform you and leave.

It is just a moment of a lower level of consciousness. But it is transient, likewise the thoughts themselves.

If you practice acceptance you will shortly see how wonderful our psychological system is.

It can reset and clear the bugs by itself. No need for assistance.

The only thing we can do is to stay out of its way.

I hope that makes sense to you, my friend.

Even if a fraction of what I’ve said stays with you when you go back to your day, you will start seeing life in a completely new way.

And with that said,

I’m gonna go now…

Speak to you soon,

With love

Dimmi Valenti
