After I finished watching one of those inspirational Youtube videos about self-development, one question popped up in my Mind:
How do I choose the best mentor, coach or talking therapist for myself, to help me go through a difficult time and progress to a better future?
And what is the difference between them all?
If you are just a little curious like me, I’m sure you have also asked yourselves similar questions.
Before we dive into this topic, please have in mind my deepest respect and love for all the human helpers out there. We all do what we believe is the best way to help people. So in everything said below, I just want to do my best to give more clarification. And at the same time, display my most heartfelt beliefs in what I practise.
Ok as we established that let’s continue…
There are more than 400 known ways of helping people, having some sort of mental health or psychological issues.
Fascinating isn’t it?…
And yet so many people are in desperate need of help. Most of the time the problem with getting counselling, for example, is simply not enough councillors available. I personally know people waiting for months. At some point, they give up and lose the inclination to see a specialist. It is very common by the time the help is finally available, it is too late, unfortunately. From what I have observed that’s the crazy situation of most of the organisations, dealing with mental health issues. Although they are really striving to provide the best service, their preoccupation is working against them. They simply can’t help everyone in need on time.
That’s one of the main reasons lots of people start searching for different paths of getting help. It often leads them to flexible, reliable, result-focused practitioners.
But then another issue arises,
there are so many different types of practitioners, therapists and life coaches. Consequently, picking the right one for yourself seems almost impossible.
But don’t worry.. there is a way out of it…
Maybe knowing and understanding a little bit more the basic principles behind different practices will give you some direction.
Having in mind how many they are, it is difficult for me to describe them all. What exactly they are doing and the differences between them.
However, I will try to do so…at least with the once I’m familiar with.
It is a well-known fact that psychology and psychoanalysis, as we know them are disciplines, formed only around 130 years ago. Almost all of the theories and practices in the field are based on the knowledge and discoveries of the neurologist Sigmund Freud. As far as I’m aware in a psychoanalysis session the practitioner is working mainly concentrating on the clients’ past. And it is accepted, all the problems originate from the past indeed. Although obviously, it has its many advantages, often these sessions can be carried on for years. Sometimes during the entire lifetime of the client. I personally know people who have been having regular sessions with their psychoanalyst for more than a decade. They still haven’t found the answers of whatever bothers them and they are still continuing the meetings.
Ok enough with Sigmund Freud, I really don’t have the knowledge needed to comment further on his work and methods.
Let’s find out who are these life coaches, transformational coaches, mentors. They are becoming more and more popular and trendy nowadays, aren’t they?
Well …most of the so-called life coaches and transformational coaches, talking therapists are using knowledge and techniques of NLP (neuro-linguistic programming), CBT (cognitive-behaviour therapy), Hypnotherapy, Gestalt therapy and so on. In fact, I’m not exactly sure how the title matters. They can be called coaches, therapists, people helpers, psychologists. All of them are striving to do the same thing, to help clients who are experiencing a psychological/mental obstacle. The systems and the approach they use differ. The most important is all of them are very effective in helping clients with a variety of mental issues.
Most of these specialists agree on one thing. By changing your thought patterns, beliefs and values and understand them, you will have a change of emotions, reactions and behaviours. Most likely it will help you make a huge change in your life. As a result, you will achieve a better quality of living. Most of these practitioners are preferred in terms of Goal setting, achieving something that you wish and believe will make your life better and fulfilled. NLP, in particular, has proven results of dealing competently with phobias.
NLP is relatively new knowledge.
It was described around 50 years ago by Richard Bandler and John Grinder. Most of the world-famous coaches/gurus we follow on Youtube nowadays are practising it with a huge success.
The thing is all of these practices are based on models, theories, methods. They are very time consuming and very often you can target only one issue at a time. For example, if you feel depressed firstly you work on your depression. Then you are good to go. Further, you feel anxious or have a phobia and you come back for another set of sessions. Then you sort that out. And then it is another thing and so on and so on.
It is a good business, it is highly beneficial for the client as well. However, it doesn’t look like it is the best, most effective and complex therapy that exist.
At least that is something of a value for me. If I can learn how to make all of my problems go away with one simple understanding, it would definitely get my attention.
And what about you? How would you feel if such a thing exist and is been around for nearly 50 years?
Are you excited already, if not you should get started…
